How to Turn a Shopify Store Into a Mobile App

You can turn an existing Shopify store into a mobile app either by using a mobile app builder or by building a custom app. The right option depends on how much customization you need, your budget, and how quickly you want to launch.

The store you already have is the starting point. Products, prices, and inventory should stay in Shopify. The app is another way for customers to shop that catalog, not a second store you have to keep in sync by hand.

What you need before you start

A live Shopify store, or at least a store with the real catalog, not an empty demo. A decision about who will edit the app after launch. Apple and Google developer accounts in the company name, not a freelancer’s personal login. And a reason: usually repeat customers on their phones, not a vague sense that “brands have apps.”

If that reason is still fuzzy, read do Shopify stores need a mobile app? before you spend the month.

Connect the store

With a builder, you install the app on the Shopify store customers buy from and grant access to products, collections, and orders. With a custom build, your developers do the same job through Shopify’s APIs. Either way, Shopify should remain the source of truth.

Change a price in Shopify admin and confirm the app preview shows it. If you have to export a spreadsheet to update the app, you will fight drift.

Catalog, design, and checkout

Point collections at live Shopify collections. Home, product, and cart are the screens that matter first. Brand colors and type should match the store people already recognize. A pretty home screen with a broken product page is not a launch.

Checkout should keep using the discounts, shipping, and taxes you already configured in Shopify. If a proposal replaces checkout with something your team cannot explain, ask what happens to duties, gift cards, and discount codes before you agree.

Push notifications

Push is optional at the start. Turn it on after someone can actually browse and check out. People only receive it if they install the app and allow notifications. A practical use is a new product, a restock, or a reminder that opens the cart. More on tone and frequency: Shopify push notifications.

Test it like a customer

One thing that is easy to forget: you are probably not shopping your own store the way a customer does. Place a real order. Try a sold-out variant. Open the app on a slow connection. Check that a collection you just edited in Shopify shows up.

Do this before you write the store listing. Reviewers, and customers, notice an empty catalog.

App Store and Play Store

Publishing is a separate job from building screens. You need screenshots, an icon, a privacy policy URL, and answers to Apple’s and Google’s questionnaires. The Apple Developer Program is $99 USD per year. Google Play’s developer registration is a one-time $25 USD fee. Store review takes as long as Apple and Google take. Builder work can be finished in about a day. Approval is not on that clock.

App builder or custom development

ApproachMakes sense when
App builderYou want a shopping app connected to Shopify, and the editor can cover your screens.
Custom appYou need behavior a builder cannot express, and you can staff the build and the upkeep.
Neither, for nowThe store is still proving what it sells. Fix the website first.

A longer comparison is Shopify mobile app builder vs custom development. Cost shape is in how much a Shopify mobile app costs.

Where Appziot fits

Appziot is one builder for this job. You connect Shopify, edit layouts and themes in the dashboard, send push, and prepare an iOS and Android app. Lite is $29 per month or $290 per year, without push. Starter is $99 per month or $990 per year. Growth is $199 per month or $1,990 per year. All three include a 30-day trial. It will not invent a native feature the widgets do not have. If that is the requirement, budget a custom project instead of forcing it into the editor.

Frequently asked questions

Can I create both an iOS and an Android app from Shopify?

Yes. With Appziot you set the shopping app up once and prepare it for both stores. You still need your own Apple and Google developer accounts, and each store reviews the listing.

Does the app replace my Shopify theme?

No. The website stays up for search, ads, and people who will never install an app. The app is an extra surface for people who want it on their phone.

What if I change a product after the app is live?

Change it in Shopify. The app should read products, inventory, and orders from the store. Supported layout and content edits in Appziot can publish without a new store listing. Some larger changes still need Apple or Google review.
