Do Shopify Stores Need a Mobile App?

Written by the Appziot team (Product). Published October 5, 2026. Updated October 5, 2026. Questions: support@appziot.com.

No. A Shopify store does not need a mobile app by default. The website is still how new customers find you, and a responsive theme is not optional.

An app is worth a serious look when people already buy from you more than once, a lot of those orders happen on a phone, and you can name what the app would do that the mobile site does not. If you cannot name that, keep the money on the site.

When an app is a reasonable idea

Repeat purchase is the clearest signal. Consumables, replenishment, and brands people return to without a new Google search get more from a home-screen icon than a store that sells one considered purchase a year.

Mobile traffic matters only if those visitors are your customers, not just ad clicks that bounce. Look at who orders again, and whether they already do it from a phone. A dedicated app gives those people a direct door and a push channel. It does not fix a product people do not want.

When we would wait

If the store is still getting its first few hundred customers, an app can wait. There are usually more important things to fix first: the offer, the product page, shipping, and whether anyone comes back at all.

If customers mostly buy once every six months, an app is probably not the first thing to spend money on. They will not open it often enough for the install to matter. Email or SMS on the day they are likely to need you again may do more.

The same is true if the budget cannot cover a subscription or a maintenance plan plus the Apple and Google accounts. A half-finished listing helps no one.

Questions that change the answer

QuestionLeans toward an appLeans toward waiting
How often do people buy again?Often enough that a shortcut would get usedRarely, or you do not know yet
Where do repeat orders happen?Mostly on phonesMostly on desktop, or you have little repeat data
What would the app do?Reorder, push, a layout you control“Have an app” with nothing underneath
What does the product need?A standard shopping flow Shopify already runsCustom hardware, a unique checkout, or tools a builder cannot express
Can you pay for upkeep?Yes, as a subscription or a teamThe launch would consume the budget

Website, PWA, builder, custom

You can also stay on the mobile website, or invest in a PWA if you want an installable web experience without a store listing. A builder is the middle path when you want iOS and Android without staffing a mobile team. Custom development is for requirements those options cannot meet.

This is where the decision gets a little less obvious. A store can have strong mobile traffic and still not need an app, if that traffic is all first-time visitors from ads. The app does not rank in Google for you. The site does.

Where Appziot fits

If you are past the “should we?” question and you want a shopping app on top of Shopify, Appziot is built for that. The 30-day trial is a way to see the real catalog in an app before you commit. It is not a reason to skip the decision above. If the store is early, we would rather you wait.

Frequently asked questions

Should a growing Shopify store build a mobile app?

Only if growth includes repeat purchases on mobile, and you can say what the app will do. Growth in first-time traffic is a website and merchandising problem first.

Is mobile traffic enough of a reason?

No. Most stores already see phones in their analytics. The useful split is how many of those sessions are returning customers, and whether a home-screen app would make their next order easier.

What if I am unsure?

Keep the website as the main investment. If repeat purchase is real and you want to test an app, use a trial on your live catalog rather than commissioning a custom build to satisfy curiosity.
